A monthly update for

Teachers and PTA Coordinators

Vol.  # 10    Issue  # 1

News from the office….

We know this will come as a surprise, but we thought you should know sooner, rather than later, that our very own Loreto Miranda will be leaving for Uruguay at the end of this school year. She and her family are preparing to move during the summer, and as you can imagine, we are reluctantly preparing our goodbyes. Happily for Loreto though, this move promises to be a wonderful and exciting opportunity for the entire family! Loreto has been a cherished member the FLES team since she began teaching Spanish in 1999. Her positive energy, her genuine warmth and sparkling smile will surely be missed by everyone in the office – and this is to say nothing of her excellence in the classroom and her wonderful way with each of our teachers and coordinators over the years! Luckily, we can hold on to our farewell wishes for now…it’s only February.

Introductory Evaluations

The Introductory Evaluation process is under way. Evaluation forms have been sent to teachers by email. Teachers, please send the evaluation forms home in backpacks or email directly to parents (better!).

Coordinators please organize a collection envelope or box in your school’s office for the forms. f\Forward them to us along with your own! Thanks!

New Year Celebration a Wonderful Success!

Congratulations to our FLES Chinese Teachers, their students and each parent who came to the February 16th Year of the Rat celebration at Lake Forest Mall. Forty eight of our K-5th grade Chinese students came to sing a collection of “mouse themed” songs for the public. Each of them came dressed in festive colors and wore a FLES “crown” with mouse ears attached. We are very pleased to have been invited, once again, to participate in  this event sponsored by the CCACC. In light of our success, we would like to recognize the dedication and energy of Shr-Mei Wang, who worked with teachers, students and parents to coordinate FLES participation this year. A special thanks to our Chinese teachers for their musical talents and the enthusiasm they showed for this Saturday event!  ¨Grace Chen¨JeanChen¨Wen-Chien Chiang¨MayGlick¨Chu-Hua Li¨Yi Chun Lin¨ Lorna Loh¨Daiyuan Luo¨ Fuh Yun Mei¨Ping Wei Tsai¨Shr-Mei Wang¨ Xie Xie to all!

Winter Weather Surprises

It has been a challenge this month  to determine what kind of weather will lead to a cancellation of FLES classes. You’ve been doing a great job checking the MCPS website for last minute notices and Loreto’s been doing her best  to inform you!Spring’s around the  corner…..

FLES Teacher Coffee

Come join us this Friday, February 29th from 10:00-12:00 here in the office for coffee, music and camaraderie!

Thank you, Baldrige Quality Academy

On February 14th & 15th our teachers were invited to participate in a workshop offered by Fran Morris of the Baldrige Academy at Glenallen ES. Our teachers visited classrooms and discussed techniques for gaining control of their classrooms and discussed ideas for continuous growth and improvement as teachers. You will hear more about how we might incorporate some Baldrige ideas in the FLES program ….Thanks to Fran for making this opportunity available to FLES staff and teachers this year.
