Introduction
The purpose of
the Introductory Program is to expose and introduce children in Kindergarten and 1st grade, to a new language in a fun way—using songs, games, body movements and
art activities—through a fairy tale. Each 45 minute lesson is comprised of an opening routine, circle time, activity time and a closing routine. The program incorporates concepts children
learn in these grades in their regular curriculum. Like the regular FLES
Program, classes are held before or after school, and are coordinated by parent
volunteers.
The Introductory
Program consists of twenty 45 minute long classes per year, or ten classes per story. (Afternoon classes
meet for an additional 15 minutes, so that the children can have a snack before
the lesson begins.) A child may participate for one or two years since the stories rotate each year.
The Introductory Curriculum is based around the following stories:
Little Red
Riding Hood___ The
Three Little Pigs
The
City Mouse and the Country Mouse__ The
Little Red Hen
Different vocabulary
is taught in each module. However, some words/expressions are covered in
all of the modules, such as: greetings, numbers and colors. Some children
will participate in more than one module, so they will be more familiar with
the overlapping vocabulary.
In the Introductory
Program the teacher starts by speaking
mostly in English, and by the eighth lesson you will tell the entire story
in French, Chinese or Spanish.
