Mission and Goals
THE
FLES Mission
The Foreign Language
in Elementary Schools (FLES) Program provides quality foreign language instruction
to children in Montgomery County Public elementary and middle schools. Classes
are held before and after school, and are coordinated through local Parent
Teacher Associations with the cooperation of the Montgomery
County Public School System (MCPS). MCCPTA-Educational Programs, Inc.—a
non-profit corporation—administers the FLES program as a service to
local PTAs.
The
FLES Program is founded in the firm belief that:
Language
and communication are at the heart of the human experience;
The study of a second language improves overall academic performance
and encourages superior problem-solving skills;
The
study of a second language is most beneficial when initiated during primary
school
and continued through second school;
Language instruction opens
avenues to an increasingly global community
and the successes that result from broad international exposure.
Goals of the FLES Program
- To provide quality
instruction of the sequential FLES curriculum, reinforcing the content of
MCPS curriculum
- To generate an
interest in and curiosity about another culture
- To build confidence
in hearing and speaking in another language
- To provide a
firm foundation for the continued study of language in middle and high school
- To impart enthusiasm
and aptitude for participating in the increasingly global community and economy
