Who is the PTA FLES Coordinator?
The FLES Coordinator is a volunteer parent who steps up to be in charge of the FLES Program for the school’s PTA.
How are language offerings and schedules determined?
PTA requests, parent interest and registration response determine which language is offered and the schedule of classes at each school.
How many classes are offered per year?
There are 20 classes in the Introductory Program for K-1st grades; there are 24 classes in the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Middle School Programs” for 2nd through 6th grades.
When are FLES classes held?
FLES classes are held right before or after school on school days only.
When does registration take place?
Registration for FLES classes takes place during the first weeks of school and is handled by the PTA FLES Coordinator at each school.
Are the classes for students with prior exposure to the language?
Classes are intended for children with little to no previous exposure to the language. However, exceptions may be made based on an individual basis.
Is participation in the Introductory level a prerequisite for registration for the Beginner level?
No.
Can children participate at a school other than their home school?
Yes, though transportation is not provided.
Does FLES involve homework, tests and grades?
No, the focus is on classroom participation. Progress reports are sent home twice a year.
Do teachers use a particular curriculum?
Our teachers follow the FLES curriculum which provides consistency of instruction among FLES teachers throughout the region. Our material is aligned with middle and high school foreign language programs.
Do children go directly to FLES class after the school day?
Yes, when school is dismissed children typically walk to the FLES classroom. There they are greeted by their FLES teacher. Introductory classes have a 15 minute transition time which allows students time to eat a small snack in the classroom before the FLES lesson begins.
If the teacher is sick, will there be a substitute?
The FLES teacher will find a substitute from the FLES teaching team if needed during the year.
Are there classes on early release days, holidays or on school days affected by bad weather?
There are no afternoon classes on early release days and no morning classes if there is a delayed opening. FLES classes are held on school days only.
If class is cancelled for any reason will it be made up?
If class must be cancelled you will be notified by the FLES teacher or PTA FLES Coordinator and the class will be made up before the end of the year.
