about Teaching with FLES What do
the initials F – L – E – S stand for? FLES is short
for Foreign Language in Elementary Schools. Is FLES
a part of the Montgomery County Public School System? No, FLES is part
of a private, non-profit corporation that provides extra-curricular
(before and after school) foreign language instruction. Do I need
to be a certified teacher to work for FLES? No, we will train you to
use our own curriculum. However, we do look for candidates who have
experience teaching or working with young children in a classroom setting. How much
does FLES pay? This year, the starting salary for new teachers is $19.40 per hour, with an additional $10.00 for lesson preparation.
What are the hours? The hours of instruction for the FLES program are
limited to one hour before school and one hour after school, except
for Friday afternoon. Therefore, the maximum number of hours we can
offer is 9 hours per week. We only hire candidates who are available
at least two mornings and/or two afternoons per week.
Are there any benefits? No, FLES does not offer any benefits. What employment
documentation is required? If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must provide
a social security number and employment verification documentation,
such as:, green card, G-4 visa, H-1 visa, or a diplomatic visa. Are there
any other requirements for working for FLES? Yes, you must complete
a week-long new teacher training workshop. Also, you must observe experienced
teachers giving classes. We will give you a list of classes throughout
the county from which to choose to complete this requirement. Does FLES
provide any teaching materials? Yes. During the New Teacher Training
Workshop, you will receive: a FLES teacher’s manual including
a copy of student workbooks and a portfolio with about thirty color
visuals that correspond to the curriculum. |
